Workshop on Indigenous Engagement

This workshop run by Gary Pritchard will give students and ECR a foundation to work more effectively with Indigenous Peoples in aquatic research and elsewhere. The workshop consists of three 1-hour webinars on: (1) How to Work with Indigenous Peoples one-on-one; (2) Treaties 101; and (3) Decolonizing the Environment. Attendees will learn how to contact and engage with Indigenous communities, what treaties are and how they should be considered in your research, and how to incorporate traditional knowledge and western science perspectives. At the end of the workshop there will be an informal open question period with Gary where attendees can pose any unanswered questions. A take-home digital document bundle and certification of attendance will also be provided. If There is a high number of requests, CCFFR-SCL will provide additional workshops at a later date.

About Gary Pritchard: Gary is a wildlife biologist who specializes in fish ecology. He is a member of Curve Lake First Nation, and has vast experience running workshops about effectively and respectfully engaging with Indigenous Communities in Canada.

Tentative outline:

9:00 “Trick or Treat” Poll This will be a short fun poll that registrants can use to gauge their knowledge of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
9:30     Webinar #1: How to Work with Indigenous Peoples Many individuals and organizations are unsure of how to work effectively and authentically with Indigenous peoples. In the first webinar of our series, Gary Pritchard will speak about the best strategies and approaches for engaging with Indigenous communities. Topics included how to address community members, how to begin engaging with communities, planning proactively, what to expect during your first meeting, and do’s and don’ts of meetings with communities.
10:30 Webinar #2: Treaties 101 Many people think of treaty rights as “special” indigenous rights however, all people living in Canada are treaty people with their own set of rights and responsibilities. In the second webinar of the series, Gary will speak about treaties as a foundational part of Canadian society. The webinar covers the following topics: What are inherent rights? What is a treaty? Who are treaty people? What are treaties in the colonial era and how do treaty relations work today?

12:30 Webinar #3: Decolonizing the Environment Many people are unsure about how to incorporate traditional knowledge and western science. In this webinar, Gary will speak about how to decolonize environmental and ecological sciences based on his experience seeing the environment from both traditional and western science perspectives.
13:30 Fireside Chat Open Question Session This will be an informal half-hour question session where attendees can ask Gary any other questions they might have or that came up during the session.
